Sir Ivor Crewe, is Master of University College, Oxford and President of the UK Academy of Social Sciences.
He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Essex from 1995 to 2007, following spells as Pro Vice Chancellor Academic, the founding Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research, Head of the Department of Government, Co-Director of the British Election Study and Director of the ESRC Social Science Data Archive.
During his period as Vice Chancellor Sir Ivor was actively engaged on the national policy scene in higher education. He was President of UniversitiesUK from 2003 to 2005, when he led the university sector in support of the Labour Government’s proposals for higher tuition fees. In February 2018 he was appointed to the Government’s Review of Post-18 Education and Funding.
From 2009 to 2015 he served as a Governor of the School of Oriental and African Studies and of the University of the Arts London. He is currently Chair of the Higher Education Policy Institute, a governor of the European University Institute in Florence and a member of the international advisory body of the Freie Universitat Berlin (FUB).
Sir Ivor’s academic work focuses on British politics. He has written extensively on elections, public opinion and party politics in the UK. His books include Decade of Dealignment (with Bo Sarlvik) and SDP: The Birth, Life and Death of the Social Democratic Party (with Anthony King). In 2013 he published as co-author with Anthony King The Blunders of our Governments (OneWorld Publishers).
